This Meeting convenes national statistical offices and machineries for the advancement of women, among other institutions. It will take place, for the first time, at the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile, on September 25, 2023, within the framework of the XII Meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas.

The International Experts Meeting on Time Use and Unpaid Work (TUM) is organized by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico (INEGI), the National Institute for Women of Mexico (INMUJERES), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and the ECLAC Division for Gender Affairs. The main objective of this Meeting is to promote the technical exchange of recent experiences among the countries of the Latin American and Caribbean region that have surveys, modules, or sets of questions for measuring time use. The above, in order to promote the transfer of knowledge to incorporate the lessons learned in future measurements and to foster its use to inform the design of public policies on care and gender equality.

Time Use Surveys are among the most powerful statistical tools to make visible the integral contribution of women to the economy and to shed light on the structure of inequalities rooted in the gendered division of labor. To the date, 23 Latin American and Caribbean countries have carried out at least one official time use measurement.
