A portrait of success: Uruguayan firms in international trade

This article provides a portrait of firm heterogeneity in connection with international activities. We analyse the impact of the extensive margins of exports and imports and of trade with different types of partners on firms’ performance, using detailed national customs and manufacturing firm survey data from Uruguay for the period 1997–2005. This is the first study to use customs data and analyse the extensive margins of trade and types of partner for Uruguayan firms. En este artículo se ofrece un retrato de la heterogeneidad de las empresas asociadas a actividades internacionales. Se analiza el impacto de los márgenes extensivos de las exportaciones e importaciones y del comercio con diferentes tipos socios en el desempeño de las empresas. Para ello, se utilizan datos administrativos de aduanas nacionales y de las encuestas industriales del Uruguay para el período 1997-2005. This article reviews the economic structure of Brazilian agriculture during the years of constrained industrialization, by providing a descriptive analysis of the sector’s main economic data. It reconsiders the debate of the 1950s and 1960s on the roles played by agriculture in national economic development; and it shows that the growth of agricultural production in Brazil was hindered by the deterioration of the terms of trade between agriculture and agribusiness, which was also associated with miserly rural wages.
