A structural shift in the trend toward higher deficits had emerged by the middle of the 1860s in Chile. For some authors, this was the result of increased spending owing to a fastgrowing economy. Another common explanation is the higher spending required to finance and then recover from the war against Spain, which began in 1864. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has announced the start of the application process for the 2017 Summer School on Latin American Economies, a training programme for young researchers interested in studying Latin America’s development process.
The Summer School’s eighteenth session will be held from 20 July to 8 September 2017 at the headquarters of the United Nations Regional Commission in Santiago, Chile.
