The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in conjunction with the Government of Chile and the members of the Inter-Agency Group on Ageing, is pleased to announce that the Regional Intergovernmental Conference on Ageing (Santiago 2003) will be held at the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile, from 19 to 21 November 2003.

The Conference is part of the follow-up to the Second World Assembly on Ageing which is being conducted by the Inter-Agency Group on Ageing. This Group was set up in March 2002 and comprises the United Nations Programme on Ageing, the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank and ECLAC. These are all international institutions whose areas of expertise are directly or indirectly related to improving the living conditions of older persons.
Participants in the Conference will include official government delegations from Latin America and the Caribbean, experts from international organizations, prominent figures from the academic world and representatives of relevant civil society organizations. The Conference is expected to result in the adoption of a regional strategy for implementing the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Conference will provide a forum for analysing the status of older persons in the countries of the region and for defining actions aimed at improving their situation. The Conference is also an opportunity to strengthen cooperation among governments and among relevant international institutions working in this area.
