The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) harder than any other region in the world. The region suffered a 7.7% GDP drop in 2020, and over a million lives have been lost. With around 60% of informal workers and 40% of all workers in the region surviving without any form of social safety net before the pandemic hit, the most vulnerable members of society are bearing the brunt of the crisis today. In recent years, studies on global value chains, which depict how interconnected countries are in terms of trade and production, have multiplied.
