The U.S. economic expansion remains on track and it has entered its ninth year. October marked the 100th month of growth for the U.S. economy. In about two years the current economic expansion will be the longest on record.1 The unemployment rate sits at 4.1%, the lowest level since December 2000, suggesting the economy has reached, or nearly reached, full capacity.
In the third quarter, the U.S. economy achieved a milestone: the output gap closed. This is the first time that the output gap, or the difference between the actual GDP (based on data by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of …

The Caribbean recorded economic growth of only 0.8 per cent in 2016 but growth is expected to rebound to 2.4 per cent in 2017. The poor performance observed in 2016 was primarily due to a 3.7 percent contraction in the goods producing economies, which were hard hit by the decline in commodity prices in general and hydrocarbons i…

Over the past two decades, Chile has successfully developed its wine industry, being the world’s fourth largest exporter in 2015 with mostly medium-quality wines. In addition to well known key factors such as climate and soil conditions, (foreign direct) investment in firms, imports of specialized capital equipment and highly skilled human resources, this paper explores the role of 38 (knowledge intensive) services in five different segments of the wine value chain. On the basis of answers by 29 wine firms regarding services activities on a survey carried out for this study, firms indicate the…

The total amount of debt issued by LAC borrowers from January to November 2017 reached US$ 138 billion, the highest annual amount ever issued in the region. Investors’ enthusiasm for LAC assets was supported by synchronized growth at the global level, still low interest rates across de globe (with only a very gradual tightening in the United States), weakness in the U.S. dollar, and an improvement in the region’s own economic conditions. On the sovereign side, seventeen countries tapped international bond markets this year, with Argentina topping the list with 28% of the total sovereign issuan…
The Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Indicator Framework is endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission as the monitoring mechanism for the 169 targets and more than 230 indicators of the SDGs. Reporting of these indicators will pose a formidable challenge to the Caribbean given the statistical capacity of countries of the subregion. The results of an ECLAC survey show that only three of the eleven countries that participated reported having the capacity to produce at least 50 per cent of the indicators. The capacities of National Statistical Offices will need to be signif…

Regional economic integration is stronger when complementarity and synergy effects are generated between “de jure” economic integration and close economic relations achieved autonomously through market-led /business-driven integration. This observation is important when we consider bringing closer the economic ties between Asia Pacific and Latin America. Japan has a large potential to contribute to the development of such economic ties. This is precisely because of the unique position that Japan has long retained both in East Asia and Latin America, and its catalytic role for the process of in…

Many countries are in the early stages of conceptualizing
a strategy for SDG implementation. Therefore, the
importance of national mainstreaming of the SDGs is
critical to have national ownership of the 2030 Agenda.
As Governments undertake to mainstream the SDGs in
their national development plans, it is important to ensure
that national, subnational and subregional indicators,
as well as data collection and reporting arrangements
are designed and implemented in a way that will enable
globally comparable and standardized statistics to be
compiled by the National Statistical Systems (NSS) of

The international economy is marked by major asymmetries in technological capabilities and power, both at the domestic and international levels —a point emphasized by the structuralist tradition. These asymmetries strongly affect economic outcomes and place major constraints on economic policy. This working paper discusses how the microeconomics of learning interacts with structural change and the evolution of aggregate demand to generate either virtuous paths of economic development or vicious circles of underdevelopment and lagging behind. Some implications of these growth paths for the inte…
