Information generated from mobile phones can be successfully used to contain the spread of non-communicable diseases, as was recently done to stem the spread of the Chikungunya virus in the Caribbean. This opportunity was explained in the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) recently published report titled “An assessment of big data for official statistics in the Caribbean”.
The report notes that the use of big data through geospatial (or location) information was used to support healthcare, and to design social intervention measures to address …

Abstract
This paper presents three demographic models useful for projections of social sector demand. The first model is a probabilistic national population forecast based on the collective experience of UN member states. It offers a set of probabilistic forecasts as a complement to the official UN scenario forecasts. The second model forecasts the population by age and educational level using data from a single census. Forecasts are presented for Chile which show dramatic changes in the educational composition of the elderly population and in the working-age population in the near future. The…

The eight Millennium Development Goals - which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV and AIDS and providing universal primary education by 2015 - form a blueprint for tackling critical issues facing developing countries: poverty, hunger, inadequate education, gender inequality, child and maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS, and environmental degradation. The Caribbean Millennium Development Goals Report 2010 reviews progress in the Caribbean subregion towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals on the basis of the most recent data available from official coun…
Since the adoption of the Millennium Declaration, the international statistical community and the countries of the region have been working in improving monitoring and reporting of the MDGs indicators, reducing discrepancies among values of indicators published by countries and those reported by the international agencies, and dealing with data gaps especially in countries with low statistical capacities.
Although progress has been made, there is still a lot that needs to be done aiming at strengthening the statistical and institutional capacities of official statistical agencies and oth…
Caribbean statistical offices will be carrying out the next round of population and housing censuses between 2020 and 2022. Population censuses provide perhaps the most fundamental of all government statistics. Census data are used to inform research, policymaking, planning and service delivery as well as being necessary for the calculation of many other official statistics.
Population censuses, which collect data from every household in the country, are the largest statistical exercise carried out by governments. Previous census rounds have presented real organisational and technical challeng…

Evento (Meetings and technical symposiums)
The symposium will explore the different roles that data can play in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of interventions, and will include a particular focus on the need for better official statistics on poverty in the Caribbean, both multidimensional poverty and monetary poverty. …
The data revolution for sustainable development has heralded a renewed focus on evidence-based policymaking in policy planning and implementation, but the legal foundation for the production of official statistics to inform these processes has lagged among most Caribbean countries.
By incorporating and supporting the United Nations Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics (UNFPOS) in national statistical legislation, Caribbean countries will improve the quality of and timeliness in the dissemination of official statistics. This can be achieved by revising current statistical laws or crea…
