Population ageing in the Caribbean: a four country study

The four countries studied show the classical symptoms of ageing societies in so far as they have experienced a significant decline in fertility and a considerable increase in life-expectancy. Consequently all countries analyzed are well on their way in their transition from young to increasingly older societies. The exercise found considerable gender discrepancies in all aspects, such as health, economic security, educational attainment and living arrangements. This brief note presents some thoughts about the possible effects of the failure to renew the Andean Trade Preferences and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA); and its possible expiration this coming December 31. United States President, George W. Bush, asked his country's Congress to extend the validity of the trade preferences granted to the Andean countries under the ATPDEA. Fertility and female labour supply in Latin America: new causal evidence

Abstract We study the effect of fertility on maternal labour supply in Argentina and Mexico exploiting a source of exogenous variability in family size first introduced by Angrist and Evans (1998) for the United States. We find that the estimates for the US can be generalized both qualitatively and quantitatively to the populations of two developing countries where, compared to the US, fertility is known to be higher, female education levels are much lower and there are fewer formal facilities for childcare.…
