The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the gender and social disparities existing in the
agricultural and rural sector in Caribbean economies. In this context, agricultural transformation as
occasioned by the dismantling of preferential trading arrangements is analysed to identify the most
relevant gender discriminatory measures in the current agricultural development policy and
programmes. The analysis seeks to provide the basis for enhancing understanding among policy
makers, planners and rural development practitioners of the gender and social dimension involved
in the formulati…
This study examines current trends in tourism and agriculture in Caribbean countries and
the strategy for linking them in order to facilitate their future development. The tourism industry
has, in the past, developed largely apart from other sectors such as agriculture. On the other
hand, agriculture has developed mainly to satisfy export markets. Domestic agriculture has had
limited development and has therefore been displaced to a considerable extent by food imports.
The recent promotion of agriculture tourism linkages is an attempt to enhance the local value
added of the tourism industry, w…

In 2005, abundant global liquidity, as well as low bond yields and flat yield curves, encouraged investors to seek higher returns in emerging markets, compressing credit spreads and helping borrowers to increase new bond issuance and engage in liability management. Investors were also encouraged by improving credit quality in emerging markets, pouring record amounts of money in mutual funds specializing in emerging market nations, helping to raise the total private capital flowing to those countries to unprecedented highs. Against this backdrop, spreads reached record low levels (below pre-As…
The long-term growth of economies of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) exhibits three characteristics. First, the aggregate rate of growth of CARICOM economies has declined over time. Second, the decline is attributed mainly to the Less Developed Countries (LDCs) as the More Developed Countries (MDCs) have in fact improved their growth performance. Third, all economies show a stagnation in growth since the middle of the 1990s. Fourth, a process of increasing divergence characterizes the growth performance of CARICOM economies.…
Over the last years issues concerning social security have become important items on the economic and political agenda as given current projections, the financial sustainability of current social security schemes is questioned. Research on social security in the Caribbean is however rather limited, providing decision makers with few answers on how to tackle the issue of reform in the region.
This paper highlights the current status of social security in the region. By presenting indicators of recent performance and identifying challenges that schemes in the region face, the study aims to contr…
This article concerns Mexico's industrial policy and economic performance, focusing on an analysis of the structural changes associated with NAFTA that have occurred in the country's manufacturing sector. The purpose of the article is to improve our understanding of why the post-NAFTA evolution of the Mexican economy has been characterized by lights and shadows, with low inflation, low budget deficit and a surge in non-oil exports, and on the other hand a slower than expected expansion of economic activity and employment. The article also presents some implications of economi…
This study investigates the relationship between individual and household characteristics and income inequality in Central America, the Dominican Republic and Mexico from 1990 to 2002. A Theil decomposition exercise of individual and household income inequality is used to determine factors important for the level of inequality. In addition, the use of a novel semi-parametric simulation methodology from DiNardo, Fortin and Lemieux (1996) provides counterfactual income distributions of individuals and households to assess the importance of changes in their demographic, education and labo…
