If you had to guess the leading cause of death for children and young people globally, what would you say? Malaria? Pneumonia? Suicide? They’re all up there, but no, it’s road crashes. Cars have been around for over 120 years, and we know how to prevent these tragedies. Yet road crashes still claim more than two lives every minute, and nearly 1.2 million lives every year. If these deaths were caused by a virus, it would be called a pandemic and the world would scramble to develop vaccines to prevent them. And yet reducing road deaths has long been overlooked, misunderstood …

The best description of water resources for Grand Turk was offered by Pérez Monteagudo (2000) who suggested that rain water was insufficient to ensure a regular water supply although water catchment was being practised and water catchment possibilities had been analysed. Limestone islands, mostly flat and low lying, have few possibilities for large scale surface storage, and groundwater lenses exist in very delicate equilibrium with saline seawater, and are highly likely to collapse due to sea level rise, improper extraction, drought, tidal waves or other extreme event.
A study on the impact o…
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are fundamentally a set of eight global goals
for the achievement of basic economic and social rights for all, with time-bound targets to be achieved
by the year 2015. In adopting the Millennium Declaration in 2000, the member States of the United
Nations pledged to “spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and
dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty.”1 The focus of this report is on the progress made by
Caribbean countries towards the achievement of Goal 1: the eradication of extreme poverty and
hunger; and Goal 3: t…
