Briefing note
The Honourable Minister of Energy and Energy Industries for Trinidad and Tobago, Nicole Olivierre, will be joined by the German Ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Lutz Görgens, as senior policy makers participate in the workshop entitled “Sustainable Energy in the Caribbean: Reducing the Carbon Footprint in the Caribbean through the Promotion of Energy Efficiency and the use of Renewable Energy Technologies”, to identify issues relevant to the development of energy efficiency and renewable energy policy.
The workshop, which takes place at the Kapok Hotel, Port of Spain on 17-18 May 2016, is part of a wider project on “Sustainable Energy in the Caribbean”. ECLAC Caribbean proposed the training workshop as a forum for stakeholders to share policy experiences, and undertake preliminary training for senior technicians on feasibility analysis for energy projects in the Caribbean.
The wider project seeks to engage countries in the Caribbean in strengthening their capacity for securing financing for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, as well as enhancing the policy framework for the sustainable development of the energy sector. Three pilot countries (Dominica, Saint Lucia and Martinique), will receive support in developing country profiles of their energy sectors, and identifying financing options for the development of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies in these countries.
To date the technical work of the project has benefitted from the collective contributions of ECLAC consultants, national energy policy makers, and regional partners. ECLAC has so far undertaken missions to Antigua and Barbuda, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Saint Lucia and Martinique.
