Towards a care society: The contributions of the Regional Gender Agenda to sustainable development
Gender inequality has historically been a structural feature of Latin America and the Caribbean, which is at the root of the unsustainability of the prevailing development model. In addition to exacerbating the structural challenges of gender inequality, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the unfair organization of care within society and the need to put care and sustainability at the centre of the development model. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has therefore called for faster progress towards economic, climate and gender justice …

Women’s autonomy in changing economic scenarios
In the current regional context, progress towards the commitments set out in the Regional Gender Agenda and the 2030 Agenda must be accelerated as a matter of urgency, in order to face the many challenges posed by an economic scenario that is constantly changing due to economic, technological, demographic and climate changes. There is an international asymmetry among economic agents, in international trade, and in the capacity to innovate and generate new technologies, as well as between the main greenhouse-gas-emitting countries and those that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate cha…
Regional progress report on the Montevideo Strategy for implementation of the Regional Gender Agenda within the sustainable development framework by 2030
The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean have made great strides towards achieving gender equality and women’s autonomy in recent years, especially on the regulatory and institutional fronts. However, although progress is undeniable and all the countries have rolled out initiatives relating to these themes, gender inequalities remain a structural feature of the region and there are still significant obstacles to the achievement of substantive equality. Given the persistence of inequality and its strong link with the unsustainable prevailing development pattern, ECLAC has worked with La…
