This FAL Bulletin is part of a series on ports and maritime trade in the region. It is closely related to Issue No. 337 - Number 1 / 2015, which sets out the need for a new port governance in the region to address the new circumstances that have arisen in the maritime market. As such, and given the need for contextual information, this Bulletin is divided into two sections, the first devoted to the current status of world maritime trade (with special focus on container trade), and the second detailing the situation of the shipping industry.…

Much analysis and proposals on sustainable transport policies have been developed around the world, both at government and research institutions. It is clear that no action will provide the single solution and it is imperative to act simultaneously on: i) improvement of technology in vehicles, leading to increased energy efficiency; ii) the change in driver behavior, to use less fuel per kilometer; iii) reducing the distances traveled per vehicle; and iv) a change in the type of travels towards more sustainable modes of transport. In general, the recommendations for energy efficiency in transpo…
Like many other Caribbean countries, Grenada, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are almost entirely dependent on imported petroleum as their primary source of energy. In this regard, many countries in the subregion have taken a strategic approach to long-term planning in the energy sector towards creating higher levels of efficiency on both the demand and supply sides as well as promoting diversification in the energy mix.
Within this context, this study was conducted to present mechanisms to improve energy efficiency (EE) in the transport sector in Grenada, Saint Lucia and Sain…
The lack of access to the sea is frequently cited as a reason that helps to explain the low growth rate and underdevelopment of landlocked countries. Nevertheless, development is clearly a multidimensional process and therefore cannot be contingent solely upon geographical conditions.
Composite indicators based on information linked to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
show that on average the development of landlocked countries is 20 per cent below what it would be if they were not landlocked (United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked…

This issue of the FAL Bulletin shows productivity trends at container terminals in Latin America and the Caribbean during the period from 2005 to 2013, comparing them to the trend of earlier years (2000 to 2004). One of the conclusions of the study is that most terminals in the region have improved their quay productivity in recent years, although there are large differences between the three container terminal size categories analysed. However, the author identifies a number of challenges still to be met at the region’s ports.…
El presente Boletín FAL, muestra las tendencias de la productividad de las terminales de contenedores en América Latina y el Caribe en el período 2005 a 2013 y las compara con la observada en años anteriores (2000 a 2004). The limitations faced by landlocked countries have an impact upon economic and social development since landlocked countries are highly dependent on the transportation infrastructure of neighboring countries to access maritime routes. This results in an increase in the time and cost to trade —factors which can significantly reduce the competitiveness and complementarity of the exports of a landlocked country as well as increase the price of imports. Studies indicate that the Plurinational State of Bolivia’s landlockedness results in losses estimated at 0.5% to 2% of GDP annually. However, some…
