Reporting of these indicators will pose a formidable challenge to the Caribbean given the statistical capacity of countries of the subregion. The results of an ECLAC survey show that only three of the eleven countries that participated reported having the capacity to produce at least 50 per cent of the indicators. The capacities of National Statistical Offices will need to be signif…

Many countries are in the early stages of conceptualizing
a strategy for SDG implementation. Therefore, the
importance of national mainstreaming of the SDGs is
critical to have national ownership of the 2030 Agenda.
As Governments undertake to mainstream the SDGs in
their national development plans, it is important to ensure
that national, subnational and subregional indicators,
as well as data collection and reporting arrangements
are designed and implemented in a way that will enable
globally comparable and standardized statistics to be
compiled by the National Statistical Systems (NSS) of

ECLAC Caribbean has played a significant role in the formulation of a new National Energy Policy (NEP) recently completed by the Government of the Cayman Islands.
ECLAC’s contribution to the new policy was made through a joint initiative carried out with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), aimed at promoting energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy technologies in the Caribbean. Most small island developing States (SIDS) are net
energy importers and utilize mainly fossil energy
sources to drive their economies and meet social
needs. Fossil energy is used primarily for power
generation and domestic transportation. In light of
the global challenges that arise from climate change,
many countries have initiated strategies and projects
for deploying renewable energy technologies, as
well as enhancing energy efficiency (EE). In 2016,
the International Monitory Fund (IMF) estimated that
transportation accounted for 36 per cent of the total
primary energy consumed in the Cari…
Caribbean governments can turn high fuel costs for official vehicles into huge savings on public expenditure, by switching to electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. This means that instead of paying close to US $3 per gallon, the fuel cost for a regular size light duty battery electric vehicle would be about 2.5 cents per mile.
These and other findings can be found in a new report from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) subregional headquarters for the Caribbean, entitled `Promoting energy efficiency in government transportation systems: A transiti…

Art and craft is considered to be an integral part of the tourism business, since it plays an important role as souvenirs and mementos, thereby spatially and temporarily expanding the visitor experience. It is also increasingly looked upon as an opportunity to diversify the tourism sector offerings, as well as the broader economic base. As part of the overall global creative economy, the art and craft sector has seen consistent trade growth over the past two decades, and has shown the capacity to forge even stronger linkages with the tourism sector. This paper examines the nature of this relat…
