Social development

The mission of ECLAC in the area of social development consists in promoting integral human development with a rights-based approach in Latin America and the Caribbean; conducting and disseminating analyses of the social situation in the region on particular issues and with respect to specific groups of the population; analysing the impacts, levels of investment and management of social policies and programmes implemented by the governments in the region, at their various levels; disseminating details of successful or innovative experiences to inform decision-making in countries; advising governments in the region on issues of social development; and helping train the professionals and technicians of the relevant public bodies.

Poverty Rates in Latin America Remain Above Pre-Pandemic Levels in 2022, ECLAC Warns

The Social Panorama 2022 report projects that 201 million people (32.1% of the region’s total population) live in situations of poverty, with 82 million (13.1%) of them in extreme poverty. The regional organization calls for urgently addressing the silent crisis in education to avert the risk of a lost generation.

La CEPAL participó en esta reunión de formato híbrido en las oficinas de Cetic.br | NIC.br, en la que se compartió el estado de situación del estudio en los países de la red y los avances de la nueva edición de la encuesta en 2022. Asimismo, se dedicó una parte del encuentro a compartir metodologías y experiencias con los nuevos países que están considerando realizar el estudio próximamente. También se discutió el plan de trabajo para 2023 y la difusión de los estudios realizados por la Red.

CEPAL resalta la importancia de los sistemas de protección social y políticas integrales de cuidados para revertir la injusta organización de los cuidados

En el contexto del primer encuentro virtual del ciclo de conversatorios “Transitando los Cuidados: conceptualizaciones y prácticas: desde la visión de los organismos internacionales”, profesionales de la División de Asuntos de Género y de la División de Desarrollo Social de CEPAL, destacaron el rol de los sistemas de protección social en cuanto a revertir la injusta organización de los cuidados, además de dar cuenta de las posiciones sobre los cuidados en América Latina y nutrir a la comunidad en torno a la reinterpretación del concepto y prácticas de cuidado, a partir de las experiencias de diferentes actores sociales.
