The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Optional Protocol thereto, adopted on 13 December 2006 at United Nations Headquarters, undoubtedly constituted a major landmark for persons with disabilities. It adopts a broad categorization of persons with disabilities and reaffirms that all persons with any type of disability must enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Social Development Division has been designated ECLAC focal point for following up on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and coordinating initiatives and activities carried out under the work programme in this area.
