About Trade facilitation
Trade facilitation refers to the simplification, standardization and harmonization of procedures and associated information flows required to move goods from seller to buyer and to make payment. In simple terms, trade facilitation should streamline customs procedures in order to reduce the time and cost to trade -- essentially, cut the “red tape” at the border. Trade facilitation is a vehicle for economic growth, increased trade competitiveness, deeper regional integration and a better insertion of developing countries into the regional and global value chains. The recent conclusion of negotia…

The methodology and related tools are outputs of the Regional study on the effects of climate change on the coasts of Latin America and the Caribbean which can be useful evaluating impac…

These activities are carried out in close cooperation with State institutions (including statistical institutes, health and…
About Sustainable Development
Sustainable development, the basis of the new international development agenda, is a deceptively simple notion that in fact reflects a complex balance struck between different perspectives on the interplay between the environment and economic and social development. The concept of sustainable development was the brainchild of the Brundtland Commission, set up by the United Nations General Assembly in 1983. The Commission’s report, Our Common Future (1987) defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations t…
About Environment
In late 1960s and early 1970s the world began to wake up to the importance of environmental issues, shaken from its slumber by new scientific findings, the increased sophistication of civil society movements in some countries and a few high-impact publications. These included Silent Spring by Rachel Carson (1962), The Population Bomb by Paul Ehrlich (1968) and The Limits to Growth, commissioned by the Club of Rome (1972). Until the early 1970s, international efforts to address environmental issues had targeted specific environmental problems, with scant regard for the interplay between the env…
