The study is a purely descriptive analysis of the trends in adolescent fertility and an assessment of reproductive inequalities in a defined area of the Caribbean region, over the twenty year period 1990-2010 The main data sources used are the decennial censuses of population and housing, the system of vital registration and relevant specialised surveys. The core data for the analysis are stored in the MATERNILAC database maintained by CELADE, the Population Division of ECLAC.

The countries of English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean have made significant progress in its economic and human development. Most governments have implemented programs and policies of social protection for vulnerable groups of the population, but its sustainability could be jeopardized because of the global financial crisis. Abstract We study the effect of fertility on maternal labour supply in Argentina and Mexico exploiting a source of exogenous variability in family size first introduced by Angrist and Evans (1998) for the United States. We find that the estimates for the US can be generalized both qualitatively and quantitatively to the populations of two developing countries where, compared to the US, fertility is known to be higher, female education levels are much lower and there are fewer formal facilities for childcare.…
