La Organización Mundial de la Salud estima que entre el 4% y el 6% de las personas mayores de todo el mundo han sufrido alguna forma de abuso y maltrato, ya sea físico, financiero o emocional. Además, investigaciones recientes sugieren que el abuso, el abandono y la violencia contra las personas mayores, tanto en el hogar como en las instituciones, son mucho más frecuentes de lo que se ha reconocido.
