The Amazon region at the heart of the Brazilian economy’s commodity-export model: the case of the State of Pará
The Brazilian economy has undergone far-reaching changes, related especially to the loss of industrial capacity as deindustrialization has spread and commodity-export production has expanded. The Brazilian Amazon region forms part of the expansionary logic of the agro-industry and mining sectors. This article analyses the economic reproduction model of one of the main federative units located in that region, the State of Pará. In the context of a second straight year of declines in global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows, Latin America and the Caribbean in 2023 received $184.304 billion dollars in FDI, a figure that is 9.9% below what was recorded in 2022 but is still above the average notched in the last decade, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) reported today. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will launch on Thursday, August 1, at 11 a.m. local time in Chile (UTC/GMT-4) an annual report entitled Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2024, which provides an overview of how these flows have evolved at a global, regional and national level. The impact of public funding for research and development on business performance in Mexico
This study evaluates the impact of financial incentives for corporate innovation on the performance of Mexican companies. It also analyses the priorities underlying the incentive programmes by constructing a profile of the types of firm that are the main recipients of this kind of support. Propensity score matching —in this case, matching based on the probability of receiving such support— of data from the 2017 Research and Technological Development Survey (ESIDET) is used for this purpose.
