This article conducts a comparative analysis of the diversification of El Salvador’s baskets of exports to the United States and Central America. It uses the most detailed level of disaggregation available and organizes products by technology intensity. The results show greater export diversification and sophistication in trade with Central America. Evidence is also found that, where El Salvador is concerned, it is more advisable to strengthen South-South integration, especially within Central America, than North-South integration.…

This paper identifies potential for trade between Colombia and the European Union following the implementation of a free trade agreement as from 2013. Predictions of potential are based on estimates produced by the Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood estimator applied to a gravity model, controlling for unobserved omitted variable bias with exporter and importer time-varying fixed effects on a sample of 153 countries, from 1980 to 2012. This study analyses the effects of trade facilitation on Chilean exports in 2006-2014. It reviews evidence and studies on trade facilitation and its effects, mainly in South America; and it analyses Chile’s export basket. An extended gravity model is then estimated for Chile’s bilateral trade flow with 89 countries, to measure the effect of trade facilitation during the period analysed. The estimation is performed using static panel data with fixed, random and dynamic effects.
