Every year, on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, we gather in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
We recall the suffering of millions of innocent people - and highlight the perils of anti-Semitism and hatred of any kind.
This year we focus on journeys through the Holocaust - and I recall a recent journey of my own.
Last November, I walked through the infamous "arbeit macht frei" gate at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
I will never forget my visit.
I saw the horrific remnants of the machinery of genocide, as well as moving images of European Jewish life in the…

Comunicado de prensa
(7 November 2014) Violence against women cannot be analyzed or confronted in isolation; it must be linked to the factors of economic, social and cultural inequalities that occur in power relations between men and women, according to the latest annual report of the ECLAC Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean (OIG), unveiled during the XV International Meeting on Gender Statistics of Aguascalientes, which ends today in Mexico.
Although the document warns about the absence, heterogeneity and dispersion of statistics on violence in the region, some national figures accoun…
More than 95% of South America's exports is moved through ports. Therefore, the energy consumption of the port infrastructure is increasingly relevant to the competitiveness and sustainability of infrastructure services and the activities of the transport and logistics sector.
This point is emphasized in a report by ECLAC's Natural Resources and Infrastructure Division that was published recently in the latest edition of the FAL Bulletin on Facilitation of Transport and Trade in Latin America.
According to the study, the traffic of refrigerated containers with perishable goods in Sou…

The two main forces affecting economic development are the ongoing technological revolution and the challenge of sustainability. Technological change is altering patterns of production, consumption and behaviour in societies; at the same time, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure the sustainability of these new patterns because of the constraints resulting from the negative externalities generated by economic growth and, in many cases, by technical progress itself.
Reorienting innovation towards reducing or, if possible, reversing the effects of these externalities could create the …
