This article analyses the process whereby domestic violence in Chile became a subject of open discussion and a public issue included in the institutional agenda of the Executive and the Legislature, giving rise to preventive programmes against such violence and public services for aiding its victims, together with the adoption of a law against intra-family violence in 1994. En este artículo se analiza el proceso mediante el cual la experiencia
de violencia doméstica llega a constituirse en Chile en
tema de debate y en un problema público que se incorpora a la
agenda institucional del Ejecutivo y del Legislativo, dando lugar
a programas de prevención y servicios públicos de atención
a la violencia y a la promulgación de una ley contra la
violencia intrafamiliar en 1994. El análisis pone de manifiesto
el carácter dinámico y complejo del proceso, cuyo curso y
resultados no estaban ni podían estar determinados a priori.
