The development of a regional sustainable development goal (SDG) framework for the Caribbean must recognize the medium term challenges facing the region and the potential opportunities over the long term. The overall objective of this symposium is to identify a set of goals, among the SDGs, that are necessary to address the sustainable development needs of the Caribbean. More specifically, it is intended to highlight and raise awareness of the challenges being faced by these countries in pursuing sustainable development and provide a rationale for their choice and a reflection on what indicators might be useful to assess these goals.
Member State representatives, academics, and stakeholders, including development partners such as the CARICOM Secretariat and the United Nations system experts, will meet to discuss the findings of the study on the Caribbean and the post-2015 sustainable development agenda. The symposium will provide a forum for experts to deliberate on the region’s strategy of transitioning from the MDGs to the SDGs and how to mainstream these goals as part of the region’s development strategy. It is important that the discussions take into consideration the immediate and medium term constraints facing the region and what resource gaps might be filled from both domestic and international sources.
