La directora de la División de Asuntos de Género de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), Ana Güezmes participó por vía virtual en la presentación del Observatorio de Cuba sobre Igualdad de Género el pasado 8 de junio. La construcción, actualización y difusión de dicho portal, es de responsabilidad de la Oficina Nacional de Estadística e Información (ONEI) y de la Federación de Mujeres Cubanas. Su propósito es constituir una plataforma que recopile, procese y visibilice indicadores y analice información desde un enfoque de género y de derechos, relacionados con la situación y posición de mujeres y hombres en la sociedad cubana para fortalecer las políticas públicas dirigidas a cerrar brechas de género.

During the side event organized by ECLAC, the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Chile and UN Women, on the occasion of the Sixth Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development, the Chief of the Division for Gender Affairs of ECLAC, Ana Güezmes García, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive, multi-scalar, and cross-cutting approach to achieve the goals set forth in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Regional Gender Agenda, to prevent the deepening of gender inequalities, and to advance towards substantive equality and autonomy for all women and girls in their diversity.

The Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development is State-led and open to participation by all Latin American and Caribbean countries. It is convened under the auspices of ECLAC and guided by the principles established for all follow-up and review processes by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in September 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly.

ECLAC Member and Associate Member States reaffirmed their commitment to implement public policies to transition towards a care society oriented towards the sustainability of life and gender equality. The ECLAC members made this commitment in the Agreement signed on February 9, within the framework of the 64th Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean.

When the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all 193 Member States of the United Nations at the Sustainable Development Summit in New York in September 2015 as “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future”, it presented a historic opportunity for Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite progress, the region needs to step up their efforts.
