Colombia will hosts world leaders, data experts, statisticians and the civil society to discuss the role of data in sustainable development

The city of Medellin will host the Fifth United Nations World Data Forum, a global event that seeks to drive innovation in statistics and data, foster strategic partnerships, mobilize political and financial support, and build a stronger data base to drive sustainable development.

The United Nations World Data Forum (UNWDF) brings together experts,The UN World Data Forum is an event organized by the United Nations to bring together experts, policy makers, data professionals and other key stakeholders to discuss the role of data in global development. Its main focus is how to leverage data to monitor and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), improving decision making through more accurate, inclusive and accessible data. It also seeks to promote collaboration between different sectors to address global challenges such as poverty, climate change and inequalities.

The Fifth Edition of the United Nations World Data Forum will be held in Medellín, Colombia, from November 12 to 15, 2024, with the participation of more than 3,000 attendees, including representatives from national statistical offices, private sector organizations, academia, international agencies and civil society. By bringing together experts from various sectors, it seeks to strengthen National Statistical Systems and improve the understanding of extended data ecosystems.

The World Data Forum 2024 agenda will focus on four main thematic areas to structure its program and promote practical solutions to improve the use and management of data, in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals:

1. Innovation for inclusive data. Promotes the integration of different data sources, ensuring that all populations, including the most vulnerable, are represented and participate in data collection processes.

2. Use and value of data for decisions: Seeks to improve data literacy, ensuring that information is used to improve lives, combat misinformation, and support informed decision making.

3. Data trust, protection and ethics. Emphasizes the application of ethical and privacy protection principles in data management, ensuring trust and transparency, while maximizing the value of open data.

4. Partnerships for an equitable data ecosystem. Encourages cooperation between public and private actors to strengthen resilient data ecosystems, backed by sustainable funding and coordination mechanisms.

On 13, 14 and 15 November, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will participate in events related to the main thematic areas, as well as in some parallel events of this Forum.
