The Global Statistical Geospatial Framework (GSGF) enables a range of data to be integrated from both statistical and geospatial communities and, through the application of its five Principles and supporting key elements, permits the production of harmonized and standardized geospatially enabled statistical data. The resulting data can then be integrated with statistical, geospatial, and other information to inform and facilitate data-driven and evidence-based decision making to support local, sub-national, national, regional, and global development priorities and agendas.

Principle 5: Accessible and usable geospatially enabled statistics

Principle 5 promotes that statistics with a geospatial component be accessible, usable, and aligned with standards and good practices, to facilitate their discovery, integration, analysis, and visualization by users. It underscores the importance of national statistical offices and geospatial agencies ensuring secure access to data, protecting privacy and confidentiality, while enabling their use for evidence-based decision-making. It also emphasizes the need to ensure data quality, facilitate access to analysis and visualization tools, and publish information through web services and linked data methods that enable dynamic and automated access.

Implementation of Principle 5 achieves the following objectives:

  • Data custodians can release data, with data privacy and confidentiality protected.
  • Data users can discover and access geospatially enabled statistics.
  • Data users can undertake analysis and visualization.
  • Web services and linked data methods enable machine-to-machine access, as well as dynamic linkage of information.
  • Data users can know the status of modifications / changes in the data provided by data custodians through data integrity checks.

Seminar Objectives:

  • Provide guidance to Member States and stakeholders on the implementation of the resulting Global Statistical and Geospatial Framework - (GSGF).
  • To strengthen interrelationships with relevant groups in the statistical and geospatial communities.
  • Provide Member State representatives responsible for geostatistical integration with the opportunity to learn about challenges around statistical and geospatial integration and establish work plans that identify and promote solutions in a participatory and inclusive manner.
  • Implement and operationalize in the Member States, the Global Statistical and Geospatial Framework - GSGF, as a tool to obtain geospatially enabled statistical data for the 2030 Agenda, the 2020 Population Census Round and issues related to climate change and disaster resilience, among others.
  • Share experiences and best practices in the implementation of Principle 5 of the GSGF in the Americas region, highlighting the efforts of countries that have developed geospatial infrastructures and sustainable statistics.
