President of Uruguay Will Inaugurate the Second Meeting of ECLAC’s Regional Conference on Social Development

President Tabaré Vázquez will kick off the gathering that will be held on October 25-27 in Montevideo.

The President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez, will lead the inauguration of the Second Meeting of the Regional Conference on Social Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, a subsidiary body of ECLAC, on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at 4 p.m. local time. This meeting will take place in the facilities of the Secretariat of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) in Montevideo.

The president will be accompanied by Uruguay’s Minister of Social Development, Marina Arismendi; the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena; and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jessica Faieta.

The meeting, which will conclude on Friday, October 27, will be attended by ministers and other senior government authorities from the region as well as representatives of civil society and academia, who on different panels will address issues such as the double challenge of social and economic inclusion, social policies with a rights-based approach throughout the life cycle, and the 2030 Agenda’s social dimension and its overlap with economic and environmental dimensions to continue making progress on the goal of equality and inclusive social development in Latin America and the Caribbean, leaving no one behind.

On Thursday, October 26, Alicia Bárcena will officially unveil the document Linkages between the social and production spheres: Gaps, pillars and challenges, specially prepared for this gathering organized by ECLAC and Uruguay’s Ministry of Social Development, which will be held in conjunction with the IX Ministerial Forum for Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, convened by the UNDP.

Created in 2014, the Regional Conference on Social Development is one of ECLAC’s nine subsidiary bodies. Its aim is to promote the improvement of national policies on social development and international, regional and bilateral cooperation on social matters as well as to make progress on measuring the diverse dimensions of poverty, inequality and the structural gaps that persist in the region.

Journalists who register online can pick up their credentials on Wednesday, October 25, starting at 9 a.m. in the MERCOSUR building.
