Planning for the 2020 round of population censuses in the Caribbean
The population and housing census is a major data source that was widely used by Caribbean countries to monitor their progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It also provides a potentially rich source of data for monitoring the progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A Technical Needs Assessment Survey (TNAS) of Caribbean countries to determine their proposed plans and technical needs for the 2020 round of censuses provided a basis for assessing the viability of the census to produce data for the SDG indicators. The results of the TNAS i…

Inclusive social protection and demographic change: The implications of population ageing for social expenditure in the Caribbean
As population age structures change over the coming decades, the cost of providing public education, pensions and health care will change significantly. Falling child dependency ratios and increasing old-age dependency ratios will affect the number of people that receive education and pension benefits. The changing age profile of the population will also affect the demand for health services. This study analyses how public expenditure in these areas, in 10 Caribbean countries, is likely to evolve in response to these demographic changes. It describes how populations are ageing in the Caribbean…

Effects of internal migration on the human settlements system in Latin America and the Caribbean
The gradual abatement of rural-urban migration in Latin America and the Caribbean is leading to growing prevalence of migration between cities, a phenomenon about which little theory or empirical studies have been developed in the region. Accordingly, this work uses census microdata —the only source available in the region for estimating migration between cities— from a dozen countries to: (i) estimate the recent evolution of this migration using categories based on cities’ population size (including a residual category that groups municipalities without cities); (ii) estimate the effect of th…
