The thinking that has unilaterally dominated economic science for over five decades has recently come under intensive scrutiny and its validity and conceptual and empirical coherence are the subject of controversy. Thus the limitations of the prevailing paradigm for addressing the failures of free market economies have been laid bare.
For Latin America and the Caribbean, these failures are structural in nature, as indeed structuralism proposed in its time. Neostructuralism delves more deeply into the issues addressed in structuralism, aiming to improve positioning in the international economy,…

In this study we provide evidence regarding the relationship between the Chilean peso carry trade and currency crashes of the peso against other currencies. Using a rich dataset containing information from the local Chilean forward market, we show that speculation aimed at taking advantage of the recently large interest rate differentials between the peso and developedcountry currencies has led to several episodes of abnormal turbulence, as measured by the exchange-rate distribution’s skewness coefficient. In line with the interpretative framework linking turbulence to changes in the forward p…
This paper analyses the coordination between monetary and fiscal policy in an emerging economy with an inflation-targeting monetary regime, in a context in which default risk shocks can lead to macroeconomic imbalances. It develops a macrodynamic model in order to capture the mechanisms of default risk transmission and its effects on the definition of reaction functions for the monetary and fiscal authorities. The main findings of the model point to the existence of new mechanisms of default risk transmission associated with price and fiscal stability.…

The world foreign exchange reserves declined 7% from the first quarter of 2014 to the second quarter of 2016, mostly due to a significant reduction in reserve accumulation in emerging and developing economies – a 13% drop – which compares with a slight increase of 4.5% in advanced economies in the same period.
Emerging and developing economies reduced their share of world reserves as a result – from 68% in the second quarter of 2014 to 64% in the second quarter of 2016 – whereas the advanced economies’ share rose from 32% to 36% in the same period. The increase in foreign exchange reserves in …
