We analyze the emergence of large-scale education systems in a framework where growth is associated with changes in the configuration of the economy. We model the incentives that the economic elite could have (collectively); to accept taxation destined to finance the education of credit-constrained workers. Contrary to previous work, in our model, this incentive does not necessarily arise from a complementarity between physical and human capital in manufacturing. Instead, we emphasize the demand for human-capital-intensive services by high-income groups. Our model seems capable to account for …

for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Mexico, with financial support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The IFAD-ECLAC project analyzes the

For many countries, the acceleration of integration into the global economy and multilateral trading system provides an opportunity to access a wider range of goods and services as well as export markets, increasing their economic incomes, and improving the welfare of the citizenry. In particular, preferential trade agreements tend to increase export market access opportunities for the agro-industrial products of developing countries.
While increased market access offers many opportunities for enhancing the economic growth of exporting countries, developing countries are often unable to seize…

This study examines the options for Caribbean countries in pursuing development of their agricultural sectors given the changes taking place in the international economy. The most significant of these changes is the liberalization of the trading regimes for primary agricultural products, in particular banana, by the European Union. This has serious implications for small Caribbean countries that rely on exports of one or a few commodities and are unable to compete in free markets. However,
countries could reposition their agricultural sectors to take advantage of
export niche markets and/or g…

San José, Costa Rica, October 6, 2023 (IICA). The strengthening of regional cooperation is vital today to address the challenges and opportunities created by the confluence of crises around the world, and to be able to promote sustainable, inclusive and resilient agrifood systems in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
The point is emphasized in the latest edition of The Outlook for Agriculture and Rural Development in the Americas: A Perspective on Latin America and the Caribbean 2023-2024, a report prepared by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Food an…
Progressive structural change in rural areas requires innovative strategies and tools for its implementation, together with greater capacity for coordination among multiple actors and instruments, where the public sector is strategically placed to serve as a catalyst, according to a new publication by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
The Financial inclusion of small rural producers reveals the vast inequalities existing in rural areas where, according to the latest estimates, poverty and indigence rates practically double those of urban areas.
This means tha…

This study focuses on the link between agricultural trade openness and the sector's performance, an improvement in which could have significant impacts on poverty reduction. We emphasize Latin America, during the 1960-2005, using a recently constructed data base of agricultural support Nominal and Relative Rates of Assistance (NRA and RRA) that includes information for several developing countries, beyond the region. The principal question addressed is, does the trade regime influence sectoral growth? With the answer to this question we then make some inferences regarding the influence of…

Introduction
There is a renewed call for a new approach to development with emphasis on community empowerment or participation, with the belief that more sustainable activities will be undertaken in those communities. Much of that call, however, is coming not from within the communities, but primarily from advocates of change who may have little to do with those communities. What then will the new approach bring apart from a change in who are the decision-makers?
And how do we ensure that the change that is called for will, in fact, bring added benefits to the communities themselves?
To be sur…

Just as the world economy was showing signs of a recovery, a new global recession and a financial crisis in Europe are looming on the horizon. The economies of the great majority of countries grew in 2010, albeit at different speeds. While growth in the most developed countries was sluggish and in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) averaged a little over 4%, the production of the developing economies rose by more than 6.5%, with China and India, the new engines of the world economy, leading the way. Paradoxically, the specter of recession has appeared when the global economy is also showing…

In Latin America and the Caribbean, rural spaces have undergone diverse transformations and mutations over the last decades. In the economic realm, the share of added value and employment
generated by agriculture within rural economic activities is generally lower; this is the result of the growing presence of services, such as agritourism, and processing activities.
This infographic is based on the book New narratives for Rural Transformation in Latin America and the Caribbean: a renewed measurement and classification of rural spaces…

This document examines the effects on CARICOM countries of changes in the EU import regimes for banana, rice and sugar. Changes have been pursued by the EU since the formation of the Single Market in 1992 and were determined by both internal and external factors - cost to the EU budget and WTO requirements, respectively. Changes were made to tariff quotas affecting mainly non ACP exports of bananas to the EU market; reduction in the price of sugar in the EU market and reduction in both price and tariffs in the EU rice market.…
