This paper provides empirical evidence to assess the impact of socioeconomic and political variables on different measures of income inequality based on the 27 units of the Brazilian federation in the period from 1999 to 2008. The Brazilian experience is a good example for understanding the income inequality policies in developing countries.

Although tourism has been a major economic sector in the Car ibbean s ince the mid-1960s, the sector
now faces significant challenges as competit ion intensif ies in the global tourism market. These
challenges include environmental impacts, and the need for continued high levels of public investment in
order to sustain the tourism product. The precariousness of the sector was made starkly evident with the
onset of the global recession in 2009, when the sector recorded significant decline. Notwithstanding
some limited recovery since that time, the recent experience highlighted the need for Cari…

For six years, the global economy has been driven by the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policies of easy money. Liquidity has flowed from developed to developing economies, financing infrastructure and corporate investment and allowing consumers to indulge in credit-fuelled retail spending. Thus the effective ending of the Fed’s third round of asset purchases (QE3) at the end of October represents both a watershed and the beginning of a new stage in the world economy. The end of asset-purchases comes at a challenging time for emerging markets, with China’s economy slowing, the Euro zone struggling to …

Scant empirical evidence is available on how the Latin American and Caribbean region participates in global value chains (GVCs) and what drives this process. Frequent questions in this connection are: How has the spread of information and communications technologies and free trade agreements facilitated the region’s participation in GVCs? To what extent do small firms participate in GVCs? What learning mechanisms and production and technological feedbacks operate in different types of GVCs? How can countries and firms take advantage of upgrading processes in GVCs? What role do policies play to…
The paper reviews the extent of the income inequality decline which has taken place in Latin America
over 2002-2010 which reduced the regional Gini index to the level of the early 1980s. The paper then
focuses on the factors which may explain such decline. These include a drop in the skill premium
following an expansion of secondary education, the adoption of a new development model by a growing
number of progressive governments which adopted prudent but more equitable macroeconomic, tax,
social assistance and labor policies. For the region as a whole, gains in terms of trade, remittances, FDI…

This paper analyses the viability, implications and challenges of expanding the Latin American Reserve Fund (FLAR) to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay. A regional reserve fund should be viewed as one of a broad range of mechanisms offered by the international financial architecture to address balance-of-payment difficulties. A fund with resources of between US$ 9 and US$ 10 billion at its disposal would be able to cover the potential funding needs of its members in the most likely scenarios, without necessarily becoming the lender of last resort for all its members. In more extrem…
