Ageing
Population ageing results from changes in the demographic composition (fertility and mortality). It is defined as a gradual rise in the proportion of persons aged over 60 years. The Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Centre (CELADE)-Population Division of ECLAC has built up valuable experience in research, technical assistance and training on this topic, and acts as the focal point for ageing in the regional follow-up to United Nations activities in this area.
Activities
Informative (Virtual) Follow-up Meeting on the Regional Intergovernmental Conference on Ageing and the Rights of Older Persons in Latin America and the Caribbean
The objectives of the meeting are to present the regional planning for the next two years within the framework of the fifth review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, to foster dialogue between countries and the Technical Secretariat of the Conference regarding the preparation of national reports in 2026, and to make ECLAC’s technical assistance available to countries that may require it for the preparation of their reports.
Seminario Regional “Envejecimiento en América Latina y el Caribe: oportunidades y desafíos para las economías y las políticas públicas”
Este Seminario Regional busca analizar, debatir y compartir perspectivas sobre los retos y posibilidades que plantea el envejecimiento poblacional, con especial atención a su dimensión económica. Además de presentar los resultados clave del reciente estudio sobre los efectos económicos de este fenómeno en la región, el evento servirá como espacio para intercambiar experiencias y evaluar cómo fortalecer las capacidades de los países para abordar este desafío.
Towards a society for all ages: building solidarity and equity across generations
The side event entitled « Towards a society for all ages: building solidarity and equity across generations » is being organized by the Regional Commissions and the Permanent Mission of Chile during the Summit of the Future Action Days. The event will be held in-person on Saturday, 21 September 2024 from 09.30 to 11.00 a.m. EST in the Conference Room (40th floor) of the Permanent Mission of Chile, located at 885 2nd Avenue, New York.
