The Sixth Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place on August 18-20, 2026 in Montevideo, Uruguay. This event will bring together representatives of government, international organizations, academia and civil society to discuss the effects of demographic change in the region and review the progress, challenges and priorities for implementing the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.

The Conference was created in 2012 by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which serves as the Secretariat, in coordination with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

In tandem with the plenary sessions, more than 30 side events will be held to explore strategic issues for the region such as migration, employment, ageing, gender equality, long-term care and ethnic-racial inclusion. 

On Tuesday, August 18, the ILO and ECLAC will kick off the agenda with a space for discussing how to strengthen capacities for labor inclusion in the region. The event Migration, employment and development: Strengthening capacities for labor inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (GMT -3) in the Torre Presidencia of Montevideo.

That same day – from 1:30 to 3 p.m. local time, also in the Torre Presidencia – the CELADE-Population Division of ECLAC will hold an event entitled Ageing and intergenerational policies in Latin America and the Caribbean: Contributions from the National Inclusion Accounts.

That evening, between 6 and 7:15 p.m., UNFPA, UN Women, ECLAC, the Government of Uruguay and AECID will analyze gender equality in light of demographic changes. That event, Ageing with rights: Gender equality in light of demographic changes in Latin America and the Caribbean, will take place in the Florida conference room (Sala Florida) of the Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel. 

On Wednesday, August 19, from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m., Uruguay’s Planning and Budget Office, ECLAC’s Division for Gender Affairs, CELADE and GIZ will hold the event Financing long-term care in Latin America and the Caribbean: Possible responses for societies that age before consolidating their welfare systems, at the Torre Presidencia of Montevideo.

At the same time, Brazil’s Ministry of Racial Equality and ECLAC will host a dialogue entitled Cooperação Internacional para a Igualdade Étnico-racial: a proposta do ODS 18.

On Thursday, August 20, UNFPA LACRO, ECLAC, Red Aliadas, the Government of Uruguay, Movimiento Cero Embarazo Adolescente and CAF will promote a debate on preventing child marriage and early unions, as well as teenage pregnancy, at an event entitled A decade of action to achieve substantive equality and the care society: An urgent and comprehensive response to prevent child marriage and early unions and pregnancy in adolescents in Latin America and the Caribbean. This event will take place from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. in the Florida conference room (Sala Florida) of the Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel.
