Authorities from the region's countries and experts at international organizations will meet on November 26 at the Commission's headquarters in Santiago, Chile, at the high-level roundtable A Latin American view on the governance of natural resources for equality, where they will discuss and explore in depth the current paradigm for exploiting these resources.
In recent years, Latin American and Caribbean countries have lived through a period of high prices for their natural resources, but the region has not taken advantage of the investment potential of these surpluses to move towards development with greater degrees of equality.
That is why ECLAC proposes changing the current paradigm through governance that is compatible with sustainability and equality, which requires policies that can address multiple challenges on the fiscal, regulatory, macroeconomic and public investment fronts, as well as broad-based social compacts that focus on shared objectives.
At the meeting-organized by ECLAC through its Natural Resources and Infrastructure Division and in conjunction with the Norwegian Embassy in Chile-participants will discuss how to consolidate legal and institutional frameworks to achieve a productive structure in which the use of fiscal revenue derived from extractive industries has the ultimate goal of promoting greater equality in access to well-being, the development of skills, and reciprocal recognition among players, in a context of justice and intergenerational equality.
Meanwhile, the fifth Political dialogue on energy efficiency in Latin America and the Caribbean, organized by ECLAC with collaboration from the governments of Peru and Germany, will be held on October 27-28 in Lima, Peru.
The meeting follows up on the four previous dialogues that have taken place annually since 2010 with the aim of establishing a discussion roundtable at a political level to consolidate the horizontal and international cooperation on energy efficiency, identifying best practices in designing policies of rational and sustainable energy use in the region's countries.
During its fifth edition, the dialogue's main substantive issue this year will be energy efficiency markets. Energy ministers and other authorities will participate, along with international experts from organizations such as ECLAC, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, the International Energy Agency, the World Energy Council, the Latin American Parliament and the Organization of American States (OAS), among others.
