Briefing note
Ministers and senior authorities, as well as experts and officials from international organizations, will participate on November 18-19 in Yachay (Ecuador) in meetings organized by the Government of Ecuador and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), where they will analyze the contribution of planning to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
On November 18, the XIV Conference of Ministers and Heads of Planning of Latin America and the Caribbean will take place. It will be inaugurated by the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, and the Executive Secretary of the United Nations regional organization, Alicia Bárcena. Ecuador’s National Secretary for Planning and Development, Sandra Muñoz, will also intervene.
During this gathering, which will be open to the public and will be held in the Inniapolis Entrepreneurship Center in Yachay, participants will analyze both global perspectives as well as the context and long-term challenges for development in the region in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), approved in September by the 193 Member States of the United Nations.
Moreover, ECLAC will present a new document entitled The state of the art and challenges of planning for development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Meanwhile, on November 19 at the Yachay Tech University, the XV Meeting of the Regional Council for Planning will be held. This is an intergovernmental subsidiary body that orients the activities of ECLAC’s Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Economic and Social Planning (ILPES) and whose sessions coincide with the Conference of Ministers.
In this intergovernmental meeting, which will be closed to the public, the ministers and heads of planning will review the activities carried out by the ILPES in 2014 and 2015 along with the working program for the 2016-2017 period, which will include a proposal on training regarding the 2030 Agenda.
