Costa Rica launches new statistical geoportal to enhance the use of geospatial data

The National Institute of Statistics and Census of Costa Rica began the operation of its statistical geoportal, implemented within the framework of the project for the strengthening of geospatial capacities in national statistical offices in Latin America and the Caribbean, coordinated by ECLAC, with the financial support of the European Union and the technical cooperation of Eurostat.

This tool can manage and visualizing geolocated statistical data, improving not only the internal processes within the INEC, but also providing the possibility of integrating statistical data with other geospatial information resources that are part of the national geospatial data infrastructure of Costa Rica (IDECORI), enriching the national data ecosystem to support decision-making, public policies and sustainability.

Through a simple and user-friendly interface, the statistical geoportal of Costa Rica allows the visualization of statistical data such as economic, social and demographic indicators disaggregated territorially at the regional, provincial, cantonal and district levels. This tool is equipped with features that allow users to search by statistical topics or geographic areas and download data in different formats.

INEC experts have indicated that the statistical geoportal will be constantly updated, displaying the most recent statistical and geospatial information. They also indicate that the development of this platform and its associated management model is consistent with the five principles of the United Nations Global Statistical Geospatial Framework, whose implementation at the country level is assisted by the ECLAC Statistics Division.
