Women and men are affected differently by international trade and trade policies due to gender gaps, including disparities in participation in paid employment and entrepreneurship. To identify and estimate these differences, it is necessary to collect data that are disaggregated by gender. Specifically, gender-differentiated data is essential for analysing women’s participation in trade and is a key input into better, more granular policymaking.

In recent years, there has been an international impetus to enhance data collection related to engagement in the trade of sub-groups within society, including women. One of the four pillars of the WTO Informal Working Group on Trade and Gender's work plan, established in 2020, was to promote the use of gender-differentiated data and enhance understanding of data methodologies. Several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have combined existing datasets or initiated new surveys to shed light on women's engagement in trade and the differential impacts of trade on women and men.

This workshop aims to examine available data collection efforts and methodologies used to measure women’s engagement in trade. The target audience of the workshop comprises officials from trade ministries, statistical offices, trade promotion agencies, and other relevant agencies in Latin America and the Caribbean who are engaged in collecting and using trade data through a gender lens.
