The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound social and economic impacts across Latin America. To mitigate the effects of the crisis and improve long-term prospects for growth and well-being, the region needs to target a green recovery based on environmentally friendly growth and an expansion of renewable energy. Bringing together a range of expertise, the panel will offer insights on what steps are needed to realise green recovery, what constraints will need to be overcome and what tools are needed to create greener industrial and energy sectors.
Dr Manuel Albaladejo: Head of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) for the Southern Cone. Prior to that, he worked at the World Bank in Indonesia as PSD and trade specialist leading the trade capacity building program and the rapid response facility on investment climate. He was also a research officer at the International Development Center (Queen Elizabeth House) of Oxford University.
Lisa Viscidi: Director of the Energy, Climate Change & Extractive Industries Program at the Inter-American Dialogue. A specialist in Latin American energy issues, Lisa has written numerous reports and articles on energy policy and regulations, oil and gas markets, climate change, sustainable transport, social and environmental impacts of natural resources development, and the geopolitics of energy in the region. Before joining the Dialogue, she was New York bureau chief and Latin America team leader for Energy Intelligence Group and subsequently a manager in the energy practice at Deloitte. She has also served as director of EntreMundos, a nonprofit organization based in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.
Joseluis Samaniego: Director of Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Department at the UN Economic Commission of Latin America. Prior to that, he acted as the Director of the Center for Sustainable Transportation of Mexico City and as the Coordinator of International Affairs of the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries, having participated the negotiations of the Kyoto protocol.
Dr Amir Lebdioui: Canning House Research Fellow based at the LSE Latin America and Caribbean Centre. His research lies at the crossroads between industrial policy, natural resource management and the sustainable development agenda. As a result, his work has focused on the political economy of resource-based development, export diversification strategies, and green industrial policy in the context of renewable energy development and climate change.
