The ECLAC Special Committee on Population and Development held its meeting on 12-14 May 2010 at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago.
In response to resolution 644 (XXXII) of 2008, the Committee focused on "Population and Health in Latin America and the Caribbean: Challenges and New Challenges" as the central theme. In addition, a session was included at the meeting to consider a regional agenda for the Cairo Program of Action: towards 2014 and beyond, in line with the conclusions of the regional seminar Progress and key actions for the implementation of the Cairo Program of Action , 15 years after its adoption (Santiago, 7 and 8 October 2009), and another aimed at examining a proposal for a strategy to advance, from the perspective of Latin America and the Caribbean, an international convention on the rights of In response to the request of the third follow-up meeting of the Brasilia Declaration (Santiago, 5 and 6 October 2009).
Other priority population and development issues included in resolution 644 (XXXII) were also discussed: 2010 round of censuses; Indigenous peoples and Afro-descendant populations in Latin America; Implications of demographic transformations; Population and territory, and training in demography and population and development.
During the meeting, delegations had the opportunity to present their progress and planned actions in the framework of the implementation of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Declaration of Brasilia, as well as in the area of migration International and human rights.
