The contribution of biofuels to the sustainability of development in Latin America and the Caribbean

1 Dec 2008 | Publication

Given the increasing difficulty of ensuring the supply of crude oil and oil products, and the sharp increase in their prices, biofuels programmes in the developed countries-particularly the United States and the European Union-represent a series of opportunities, challenges and risks for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Thus, if biofuels production is to create economic growth without jeopardising our natural capital and social equity, it must be developed in the framework of well thought-out national policy.Biofuels public policy cannot ignore national objectives, which invol…

New directions for development banking in the Caribbean: financing to take advantage of unlimited supplies of labour skills and entrepreneurship

1 May 2007 | Publication

Abstract In the early 1980s, within the wider structural adjustment and liberalisation framework, financial sector reform were initiated to allow greater facility of market forces in the pricing and allocation of financial resources. Development banking seeks to define and reso…

The dynamics of specialist development banking: the case of the agriculture development bank of Trinidad and Tobago

Thus, development banks were deemed as a critical ingredient to improving access to credit, allowing for the provisioning of long-term finance at a low price, and the financing of start-up activities. Indeed, related pre-development bank financial institutions were referred to as Agricultural Development Banks. In the case of Grenada there was initially the Grenada Agricu…

Abstract The present work examines the access to credit by financially constrained SMEs in Argentina over the last decade, focusing on the role played by public banks, state credit policies, and non-traditional lending contracts such as leasing, factoring, microcredit and others. We loosely define financially constrained firms as those with good projects and insufficient internal funding. Renewable energy sources in Latin America and the Caribbean: situation and policy proposals

19 May 2004 | Publication

The World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, August 2002, responded to a new cycle of global meetings that began with the Millennium Summit. The main characteristic of this new cycle is that the focus of the debate has moved away from declarations of principle toward identifying objectives and areas of concrete action, with quantitative commitments and deadlines for compliance. Debates about energy held an important position in Johannesburg. The positive links between access to energy, eliminating poverty and improving People's health and quality of life were emphasi…
