El Consejo Regional de Planificación (CRP) es el principal órgano Intergubernamental que orienta las actividades del Instituto. Sus reuniones ordinarias son cada cuatro año y está integrado por los Ministros o Jefes de Planificación de los 40 gobiernos miembros. La Mesa Directiva del CRP (MD/CRP) se ocupa de los asuntos operativos y se reúne habitualmente una vez al año.

Para el año 2002 la reunión se realizó en Brasilia, Brasil el 8 de mayo, en el marco del Vigésimo Noveno Período de Sesiones de la CEPAL. Los países miembros de la MD/CRP examinaron, entre otras cosas, las actividades programáticas pasadas y futuras del Instituto, aspectos relativos a la organización de la próxima XI Conferencia de Ministros y Jefes de Planificación de América Latina y el Caribe y de la XII Reunión del Consejo Regional de Planificación y a la celebración de los 40 años del Instituto. Los países miembros aprobaron varias resoluciones al término de la reunión.
