Authorities and Experts Analyse Challenges of Statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Sixth meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC will focus on the development of environmental statistics and population censuses, among other issues.

(14 November 2011) The Sixth meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC (SCA-ECLAC) will talk place in Bávaro, Dominican Republic, from 16 to 18 November 2011 during which authorities and experts will analyse various issues relating to the development of statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean.

During the meeting, ministers, directors of national statistical offices, officials from other public institutions and central banks, and specialists from international organizations will focus discussions on the development of environmental statistics, the 2010 round of population censuses and the future challenges of national statistical systems in three seminars during the Conference.

It will be opened on Wednesday 16 November at 9 a.m. by Pablo Tactuk, Director of the National Statistical Office of the Dominican Republic and Chair of SCA-ECLAC, and Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of ECLAC will take part by video message. It is hoped that Leonel Fernández, President of the Dominican Republic, will also be present.

A session organized by ECLAC and the Government of Haiti will also be held during the Conference to discuss the support that the regional statistical community will provide for conducting the census in this country in 2013 and for strengthening Haitian statistics.

The delegates will also discuss the proposed updating of the Strategic Plan 2005-2015 which defines the mission, vision, specific strategic objectives and the main lines of action in which the Conference will focus its efforts towards 2015.

In addition, the draft of the biennial programme of regional and international cooperation activities of the Conference of 2012-2013 will also be presented.

The Member States will also be familiarized with and analyse the Report on the implementation of the 2009-2011 biennial programme of regional and international cooperation activities and finally they will elect a new Executive Committee of the Conference for the period 2011-2012.

SCA is a subsidiary body of ECLAC which promotes the development and improvement of national statistics, ensuring that they are comparable internationally, in addition to promoting international, regional and bilateral cooperation in the area of statistics in the region.

The media are invited to take part in this Conference, which will be held at the Hotel Hard Rock (formerly the Moon Palace) in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
