On Tuesday, September 5, renowned Chilean economist Ricardo Ffrench-Davis will deliver the XV Prebisch Lecture at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, where he will be received by Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the United Nations regional organization.
Ffrench-Davis, winner of Chile’s National Prize for the Humanities and Social Sciences in 2005 and professor at the University of Chile’s Economics Department, will make a presentation at 11 a.m. entitled “Neostructuralism and macroeconomics to grow while including.”
Ricardo Ffrench-Davis has a PhD in Economics and Master’s from the University of Chicago, and holds a degree in commercial engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He has served as Director of Research and Chief Economist at the Chilean Central Bank and was also Co-founder and Vice President of the Center for Economic Research on Latin America (CIEPLAN). From 1992 to 2004, he acted as ECLAC’s Principal Regional Adviser.
Between 2007 and 2010, Ffrench-Davis presided the United Nations Committee for Development Policy, which brings together 24 internationally prominent development specialists. Also, between 2004 and March 2010, he represented Presidents Ricardo Lagos and Michelle Bachelet in the Technical Group appointed by the leaders of Brazil, Chile, France, Spain and Germany to identify innovative sources of financing to fight hunger and poverty in the world.
Ffrench-Davis has been a visiting professor at the universities of Oxford, Complutense in Madrid and Boston, and at institutes in Spain, France, Italy and Sweden.
Between 2002 and 2006, he co-directed an International Group on Macroeconomics for Development with professor Joseph Stiglitz, the 2001 Nobel Prize-winning economist.
He has authored or edited 21 books and 150 technical articles, published in nine languages.
The Prebisch Lecture was established in April 2001 to mark the 100-year anniversary of the birth of Argentine economist Raúl Prebisch, former Executive Secretary of ECLAC and one of its key sources of inspiration. Prominent figures from Latin American economics have participated in this lecture series.
