ECLAC takes part in the 6th Council of Ministers on Environmental Sustainability of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States

The 6th Council of Ministers of Environmental Sustainability of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), was held in Fort-de-France, Martinique, between 15 and 17 May 2019, under the theme “Towards a Sustainable Caribbean Society: Reinforcing Strategic and Durable Partnerships for Advancing Sustainable Development in the Eastern Caribbean.”

The 6th Council of Ministers of Environmental Sustainability of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), was held in Fort-de-France, Martinique, between 15 and 17 May 2019, under the theme “Towards a Sustainable Caribbean Society: Reinforcing Strategic and Durable Partnerships for Advancing Sustainable Development in the Eastern Caribbean.”

The ministers and representatives from the OECS Member States discussed regional environmental integration and cooperation, the strategic interests of Caribbean territories, coordination in emerging issues such as biodiversity, climate change, sustainable energy and ocean governance, preparations for the UNFCCC COP25, wastes and sargassum.

In its capacity as technical secretariat, ECLAC presented the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean ("Escazú Agreement") to the ministers and key stakeholders and participated in the Springboard of Developmental Partners. Following-up on the Decision taken at the 5th Council of Ministers held in Montserrat in July 2018 that invited countries to ratify the Escazú Agreement, ECLAC highlighted the developments of Member States in the signature and ratification processes.
