In line with its commitment to supporting the strengthening of statistical capacities in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) conducted a technical assistance mission to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico (SEMARNAT, Spanish acronym) from August 27 to 29, 2025. The central purpose was to promote the development of interoperability mechanisms and data governance models in the environmental sector.

During the working sessions, the challenges faced by SEMARNAT in coordinating efforts among the various stakeholders in the national statistical and geospatial information system were analyzed. The fragmentation of sources and the diversity of formats specific to each subsystem have hindered the integration of public data into platforms that facilitate their shared use for analytical and decision-making purposes. Given this scenario, technical assistance provided a space for progress in defining common standards to strengthen environmental data management.

ECLAC shared international experiences and best practices in data interoperability and governance, while also discussing strategies to improve the accessibility, quality, and traceability of information. These elements are key to increasing transparency and efficiency in public management of the environmental sector.

This joint effort marks a significant step toward consolidating an open data ecosystem in Mexico, providing authorities, researchers, and citizens with reliable and timely information to address the challenges of sustainable development and climate change.

ECLAC reiterated its commitment to continue supporting the countries of the region in strengthening their statistical systems and promoting evidence-based public policies.
