Chile advances towards the implementation of a statistical geoportal with support from ECLAC

9 December 2024|Briefing note

INE technicians participated in a workshop organized by ECLAC to develop a statistical geoportal based on free software and open standards. The initiative seeks to strengthen the dissemination of official data and promote interoperability, following successful examples from other countries in the region.

On December 2, 2024, at ECLAC headquarters, a technical team from the National Institute of Statistics of Chile (INE) participated in a training workshop aimed at strengthening national capacities to implement a statistical geoportal based on free software and open standards.
This workshop is part of the technical assistance activities that ECLAC provides to INE, through the Statistics Division and the Population Division (CELADE). During the session, key aspects of ECLAC's statistical and geospatial data dissemination platforms were reviewed, as well as the technological architecture of its data banks.

Participants explored functionalities designed for different user profiles, such as online queries and visualizations, customized downloads, and access to data through APIs. In addition, the CEPALSTAT and CEPALGEO platforms were presented, highlighting the importance of ensuring interoperability between data banks through open standards.

The technological proposal for implementing statistical geoportals at the national level, developed by the Statistics Division in collaboration with Eurostat and several countries in the region, was also introduced. The functionalities of each component were analyzed, and examples of national geoportals already implemented in Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic were reviewed.

The workshop marked the beginning of a series of technical cooperation activities that seek to implement this tool at the INE of Chile in the coming months to improve the dissemination of official statistics.
