The Regional Observatory on Planning for Development renews its platform with new functions.
Work area(s)
Since its creation in 2017, the Regional Observatory on Planning for Development (ORP) has evolved into the region’s leading digital reference platform, collecting, analyzing, and systematizing key information to strengthen the institutional capacities of countries.
In 2025, the Observatory is launching a fully renewed platform: with a clearer design, intuitive navigation, and new functionalities that facilitate the search and visualization of information. The platform integrates training activities and methodological guides, while also offering more graphic and comparative resources to better understand the regional planning landscape.
The restructured database more effectively links the components of planning systems—institutions, regulations, procedures, and mechanisms—within a unified interface. This enables practical access to information on the actors, instruments, and processes that interact within national planning and public investment systems, covering areas such as open government policies, land-use planning, sustainable urban development, and mobility across the 33 countries of the region.
Strengthening Regional Knowledge Through a Renewed Platform
The new platform also enhances the value of territorial information. The renewed GeoPortal locates data within territories, making it possible to integrate statistical and geographic information, overlay external layers, and customize downloadable maps. This facilitates the understanding of development from a territorial perspective.
Similarly, the platform promotes the preservation of countries’ strategic and regulatory documents through a dedicated repository, developed in collaboration with the ECLAC Hernán Santa Cruz Library. This ensures the continuity of information beyond political and administrative cycles.
All of this is structured under an interoperability approach, based on open standards and the use of public APIs. This integration not only improves the user experience but also enables new analyses by researchers and data scientists, amplifying the value of the information and its contribution to public management.
With these improvements, the Observatory reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean. It positions itself as a platform that supports collective knowledge-building, fosters collaboration among countries, promotes mutual learning, and accompanies the region in advancing towards the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Its renewed platform, with these new functionalities, will be available as of December 1, 2025.
