Regional Seminar on Fiscal Policy Celebrates 30 Years in Existence Analyzing the Public Finances of Latin America and the Caribbean

The meeting organized by ECLAC will take place at the organization’s headquarters in Santiago, Chile on March 26-27.

The Regional Seminar on Fiscal Policy, one of the main points of reference for discussing issues related to Latin American and Caribbean countries’ public finances, will hold its 30th session in 2018.

The event, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) with support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will be held on March 26 and 27 at ECLAC’s central headquarters in Santiago, Chile.

The meeting, which is also sponsored by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and the German Cooperation, will be attended by authorities from numerous countries and distinguished international specialists, who will address the trends and challenges of fiscal policy in the region, as well as those related to spending, revenue and regional public finances, and the mobilization of resources for development financing, among other matters.

The gathering will be inaugurated on Monday, March 26 at 9 a.m. by Alicia Bárcena, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary; Rolf Peter Schulze, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chile; and Carlos Robles Fraga, Spain’s Ambassador to Chile. The first day of the seminar will also feature a panel of senior authorities, including Lea Giménez Duarte, the Paraguayan Minister of Finance; Donald Guerrero Ortiz, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Finance; Danilo Astori, Uruguay’s Minister of Economy and Finances; Martha Cubillo Jiménez, Costa Rica’s Deputy Minister of Expenditures and National Treasurer; and Ana Paula Vescovi, Brazil’s National Treasury Secretary.

In addition, in the framework of the meeting, on Monday, March 26, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena will present the Fiscal Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, an annual document produced by this United Nations regional commission that analyzes and explains the main results of fiscal dynamics in the region’s countries during the last year and that, in this edition, includes an analysis of regional fiscal policy in the last three decades and ensuing future challenges.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, March 27, the report Revenue Statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean (2018) will be presented. This publication is produced by ECLAC along with the OECD, the IDB and the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT).
