High-profile Caribbean leaders and decision-makers, including the Premier of the British Virgin Islands, are set to explore how innovative laws can boost climate finance in Caribbean SIDS at the event titled “Climate Change and Environmental Legislation in Support of the Delivery of the New Programme of Action for SIDS”. The initiative is being convened by the Parliamentary Observatory on Climate Change and Just Transition (OPCC), on 29 May 2024 in Antigua and Barbuda, as a side event to the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4).

The United Nations Information Centre for the Caribbean Area (UNIC Caribbean) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean subregional headquarters for the Caribbean (ECLAC Caribbean) are proud to announce the launch of the “Imagine a World Without Islands” campaign. With small island developing States (SIDS) facing a shaky and uncertain future, this initiative will lean on island voices to make the case that SIDS and their way of life are worth fighting for.

100+ Caribbean Youth to Discuss Ways to Achieve Sustainable Development and the future of the Region at Caribbean Youth Dialogues in April
Approximately 100 young people from the Caribbean are set to login and discuss issues affecting sustainable development and their endangered future existence as island people at the Caribbean Youth Dialogues 2024 on 3-4 April. The youth of the Caribbean will meet to brainstorm how to get Caribbean Small Island Developing States onto the path to sustainable development while grappling with slow development, the impacts of the COVID pandemic and other social and economic challenges.

ECLAC Caribbean Encourages Regional Leaders to Use Resources for Progress on Gender Equality for Women and Girls
The international community has committed to making every effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, yet we remain disturbingly behind when it comes to meeting the targets for achievement of gender equality and empowering all women and girls. The SDG indicators measuring progress on this goal signal that, globally, we are only on track to reach 15.4 per cent of the targets set for gender equality. Even more worrisome is the fact that 61.5 per cent of the gender equality targets are far or very far off track.

Traffic Assessment in Trinidad and Tobago

Where are we now: Science, Technology, Innovation and the Caribbean
This infographic from Study 110 explores the role of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in driving sustainable development in the Caribbean. While STI is recognized as crucial for progress, the study finds that many Caribbean nations have yet to prioritize it, and existing policies remain underdeveloped. The current driver of change in the region is renewable energy, influenced by factors such as reliance on expensive imported fossil fuels, falling costs of renewable energy technologies, and international commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To foster STI advancement, the study recommends promoting an STI culture, enhancing institutional support, increasing funding, integrating STI into education, and encouraging collaboration between governments, private sectors, and research institutions.

Trinidad and Tobago Commuters Spend One Month of Life in Traffic Every Year… Direct Economic Cost of Traffic in T&T - $2.26B

The direct economic cost of traffic in Trinidad and Tobago is an estimated TT$2.26 billion per year or 1.37 per cent of GDP; with the average commuter spending an average 793 hours, cumulatively 33 days – one month of the year in traffic delays. These are two of the main findings of the study Assessment of the economic costs of vehicle traffic congestion in the Caribbean – A case study of Trinidad and Tobago, produced by ECLAC Caribbean.

21st MonCom Recommends Greater Collaboration Among Countries to Improve SIDS Situation
There is need for greater collaboration among countries and subregional multilateral agencies to promote and articulate clear positions on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean. This, especially in the lead-up to the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States to be held in Antigua and Barbuda in 2024. Particular attention must also be given to the challenges implementing sustainable development in the Caribbean, with the suggestion for stronger institutions to collaborate and overcome the challenges in the region.

ECLAC CARIBBEAN DIRECTOR: International Community Must Lend a Hand to Small Island States

Director of ECLAC Caribbean Diane Quarless says that the international community will need to contribute more to support the development of Small Island Developing States; indeed, if the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are not achieved across all countries, then it is the entire global community that assumes responsibility, since the commitment to implement Agenda 2030 was made collectively by all states. Director Quarless was speaking at a media breakfast in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, organized by the United Nations Information Centre for the Caribbean on Thursday (28 Sep).
